Call for Submissions

British Art Studies is an online journal published by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (PMC), London, and the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA), New Haven.

British Art Studies reflects the dynamic and broad ranging research cultures and standards of excellence of the PMC and the YCBA, providing an innovative space for new research and scholarship on all aspects of British art. Submissions on British art, architecture, and visual culture from all periods in their most diverse and international contexts are encouraged. The digital format offers new opportunities for multimedia presentations and image-rich content. The editors welcome proposals that incorporate digital tools into art-historical scholarship.

Submissions are now being solicited for both scholarly articles (which are subject to peer review) and proposals for innovative special features to be included in issue 7. Texts of between approximately 5,000 and 8,000 words in length should be submitted via e-mail in a Word document, together with a Word document containing low-resolution accompanying images (where possible) and a list of proposed images and sources, as outlined in the style guide, available to download below. In the case of special feature proposals, please prepare an abstract of no more than 500 words and a presentation of materials to discuss with the editors. The final number of figures and the process of sourcing and commissioning media for articles accepted for publication will be discussed with authors on an individual basis, but five to ten figures are recommended. British Art Studies will endeavor to meet all reasonable costs and deal with copyright issues for illustrative materials essential to the argument of published texts. Please note that proposals for special issues are not currently being accepted.

The deadline to submit articles for the seventh issue, due publication in November 2017, is 26 May 2017. Please forward submissions to the Editorial Team (journal@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk).

Preparing your Manuscript

Please email your manuscript in a Word or equivalent document to journal@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk, along with a separate Word or equivalent document containing a list of your proposed figures, consecutively numbered and captioned (Artist, artwork, date, material, size in cm, collection, location), with thumbnails where possible.

Manuscripts should be formatted according to our style guide, which is based on The Chicago Manual of Style, modified for our global, online model.
